OBLIGATIONS OF A VOLUNTEER
Volunteers are expected to represent the Fire Department in a professional and courteous manner at all times. The time donated to the Fire Department will vary depending on the Volunteer Firefighter. It is realized that members have obligations to their family and employers that must come first. Volunteers are expected to attend the weekly Tuesday night drill and to respond to alarms whenever possible, and meeting minimum Volunteer Response Operating Guidelines.
If accepted as a volunteer, you must attend a mandatory 3 month training academy that meets twice during the week, in the evenings and also attend various classes on Saturday. Volunteers will serve a 6-month probationary period starting from the first day of the training academy. During the probationary period, recruits will be evaluated on performance, participation, and compatibilty with other coworkers. Recruits will be reviewed on a regular basis during the probationary period. Once the probationary period is completed, recruit names will be forwarded by the Chief Fire Officer to the Joint Operating Board and the Monroe Volunteer Firefighters Association for acceptance as a Volunteer.
After the probationary period, Volunteers are compensated on an hourly minimum wage as set forth by the State of Washington , which is distributed by the Monroe Fire Department. Volunteers are issued radio/pagers so they may be alerted of a call. Volunteers cannot legally exceed any speed limits and must observe all traffic laws when responding to the station for a call.
